What can I say?! I'm from Hawaii we don't get snow!! But we have TONS OF SAND!!

DIY 3D Carrot Canvas

Hey, Crafty Friends! 

I may not be Peter Cottontail but spring has sprung and, hippity-hoppity, Easter is on its way! Before I start on making Easter baskets for all the little boys and girls (a.k.a. my children), I figured I'll set the mood by making a little Easter decor for my home first. So today I'll show you how I created this simple 3D Carrat Canvas.

Farmhouse chic decor can get on the pricy side. Let me show you how you can recreate the look using scrapbooking supplies... Believe it or not, this carrot is made from FLOWERS & LEAVES!! And **Spoiler Alert** this used less than 2 whole sheet os scrapbook paper!!

First, I gathered my supplies. I knew I wanted to make a canvas. something I could hang on my wall or place on a shelf or mantle. And I knew it absolutely had to have burlap. Burlap screams farmhouse and shabby chic! Then I threw in my love for all thing paper-crafty... bring on the paper stacks!! 

I found this Fall Basics stack from DCWV (yeah, yeah- I know Fall has long since past) but bear with me... this stack had tons of greens, yellows, purples, and oranges... the same colors we also find in Easter!! Score! These are PERFECT! Check your stash, you may have paper stacks that you can use for more than one occasion!!

Once, I had everything in arm's reach I prepped my canvas. No priming here!! I did, however, cut a 7"x 9" piece of burlap and ran it through my Xyron Creative Station and applied it directly onto the center of my canvas!

 I love the different plaid papers that came in the Fall Basics stack. These 2 sheets were deep shades of orange and green that would be absolutely perfect against the burlap.

I used Big Shot and this long stemmed leaf die from David Tutera's Greenery & Flourish set from Sizzix and die-cut 6 stem from the green patterned paper.

For a more natural look and to add depth I shaded the stems and the inner parts of the leaves with ColorBox Dyestress ink in Moss using a sponge dauber. Then shaped the leaves using a ball stylus from the McGill Paper Blossoms Tool Kit.

I free-hand cut out a carrot shape from orange cardstock. Then ran it through my Xyron Creative Station. This will give me a general shape of where to place my flowers. I attached it to my canvas and made sure to leave some room at the top for the stems. Then attached all 6 stems to create the carrot top.

I used the medium sized flower on the Eileen Hull Flower Layers w/ Heart Petals die and cut out about 24 flowers from the orange plaid paper. Then shaded the edges using ColorBox Dyestress ink in Tomato and a sponge dauber.

To add dimension to the flowers, I first folded the flower in half, and then half again. Then in each quartered section, I folded it into thirds. So when opened there's a crease line in between each little scalloped edge.

I used my Mega Runner and applied adhesive to half of each flower, partially folded the flower and attached the flowers into my carrot cut-out. I continued to fill the carrot with flowers but left a small section open at top to attach a bow I made with jute twine and a button.

And here is my finished 3D Carrot Canvas...

I love how darling it turned out...

And the dimension of those flowers really pops off the canvas! Picture does not do it justice!

Feeling Grattitude Wall Art

Hello, Crafty Friends!

I'm back with Team Xyron today and we have been partnering up with Waffleflower all week to bring amazing projects featuring awesome products from both companies.

Thanksgiving is just a few days away and I thought I'd make myself a little reminder... to always express my GRATITUDE. Not just on one day out of the year but every single day. So today I have this framed piece of wall art tutorial to share with you all.

First, I gathered my materials. I dismantled my frame and removed the photo mat. I used the mat as a template and outlined it onto the back of my patterned paper with a pencil. Then, I cut out the traced shape using scissors.

I used a craft knife to cut out the inside window. Then cut a back piece from more patterned paper to layer the frame onto. I used my Xyron Mega Runner to layer and attach the two pieces together.

I used Waffleflower's amazing Feeling Gratitude Stamp Set to stamp in the window area of the frame. I used a stamp positioning tool just in case I need to restamp and want exact placement.

I stamped a second time onto plain white cardstock. The second impression didn't need to be perfect. I just stamped it to cut the two banner images.

I ran the two banner pieces through my Sticker Maker. Then applied them directly to the matching areas in the framed sentiment.

Next, I attached my chipboard flourishes onto the frame using mixed media glue. Then attached my burlap flowers and jute bow. Once the adhesive dried I inserted the mat back into the frame.

And here is my finished framed art...

Now, it's good to go!! This baby is ready to be hung on a wall or placed on a mantle or tabletop!

This is such a beautiful saying that holds very true. Feeling and being grateful is wonderful... but unless you express that gratitude no one will ever know it.

Quick & Easy Rustic Fall Mason Jar Decor

Hello, Crafty Friends!! And Hello November!! 

Well, with a heavy heart I must say goodbye to my all my Halloween decorations. 

*insert uncontrollable sobbing*

I kept them up for as long as I could before hubby took me by the hand and finally told me it was time to let it go.

So, out with the skulls, spiders, & witches... and in with the gourds and cornucopias!

Today, I'll share how I made quick and easy fall decor from recycled glass spaghetti jars!

Supplies Used

I start by cleaning and removing the labels off of these old mason jar type of glass spaghetti jars. My family eats a lot of spaghetti, and the glass jars they come in are too nice to throw out. So, I often keep them on hand. I clean them out and store them for later to recycle and/ or repurpose them. 

Simple soapy hot water is all I need to remove these labels. If I ran into an occasional rough spot, I simply applied a little bit of goo gone and gave a good rubbing with a paper towel to remove whatever remnants remained.

 I use a measuring tape to measure the circumference. I also measure the height of the areas I want to be covered and decorated. These particular jars have a recessed center. I shall use this area as a marker to where I wrap my burlap and ribbon.

The jars measure about 13.5" inches around and the recessed area measures about 3.5" high.

 Because the circumference was larger than my 12" sheets of burlap, I instead cut 2 - 7.5" pieces of burlap for each jar. I cut the burlap slightly bigger than the circumference to give an overlap.

I ran my burlap pieces through the Xyron Creative Station then burnished the burlap with a bone folder before peeling off the protective film. Then applied the strips to the center of the glass jars.

 Then wrapped them with a 2.5" wide wired ribbon around the center. I used approximately 25" of ribbon for each jar. I tied each ribbon into a simple knot then trimmed the ends at a diagonal to give them a "dovetail".

The burlap gives a nice rustic look. Pairing it with deep orange and brown colored plaid ribbon is an easy way create a "FALL" feel to the look.

Then, I glued and wrapped the lip of each jar with jute twine to finish them off.

My jars are done!! Now to fill them...

And filling them doesn't need to be difficult or expensive.

My backyard borders a pasture and is constantly filled with different wildflowers and grasses. Among them in this slightly tall grass that is similar in look to baby's breath but with smaller white blooms. I'm not sure what it's called but when bunched and bundle together it really completes the rustic feel I was going for.

Simple and pretty!

And when positioned in front of a mirror is made to look a whole lot fuller than it really is! 

I hope you enjoyed my upcycled project and it makes you give those usually discarded jars a second thought. Repurposing them isn't just good for the environment, especially during the holidays, it's good for your wallet too!!

Mixed Media - Awaken the Soul - Journal

Hi, Crafty Friends!! 

I'm back again with another Mixed Media Journal Project today. Since discovering that I can dramatically shorten the length of time I can put these bad boys together I have been even more addicted to making them!

I can't get enough of Eileen Hull's Journal Die! Journals are so on trend but tend to get very pricey when buying pre-made ones. But with Eileen's Heartfelt Journal die from Sizzix I can make as many as I want whenever I want and customize and personalize each one, making them as extravagant or as minimalistic as I want.

This and my last journal are quite detailed. But just because they're detailed doesn't necessarily mean difficult. Let me show you how I made this journal using unexpected materials.

I started by cutting my chipboard, burlap sheet, and corrugated cardstock into 6"x 9" pieces.

Then I ran the CHIPBOARD pieces through my Xyron Creative Station. Once I ran it through I flipped it over and ran it through one more time. This way I have adhesive on both sides. I repeated this for both pieces of chipboard.

Once both pieces of chipboard were covered in adhesive, I peeled back the protective film and attached a burlap sheet to one side and a corrugated sheet to the other. I repeated those steps for the second piece of chipboard as well. These will be my covers.

I ran my covered chipboard through my Sizzix Big Shot using my Eileen 

Hull Journal Die (Corrugated side FACE DOWN, against the blade).

Then added Mixed Media Glue to the spine and adhered them together, Lining them up using the pre-cut holes. Then clipped the ends together with a clip and set a heavy object on top till the glue set.

 While that was drying, I ran pieces of cheesecloth and burlap I randomly cut up through my Xyron Creative Station.

Then applied the burlap and cheesecloth onto the front of my cover.

I die cut a frame from Eileen's NEW Book & Pages, Trinket Box & Frame from white Mat Board. 

I used Little Birdie's Brick wall spackle with some Whipped Spackle to stencil on some texture.

 Once the paste was dry, I ran the frame through my Creative Station, Peeled off the protective film and applied it onto the front cover over the cheesecloth. 

Then added a little fleur de lis metal embellishment to the top of the frame.

Here's a little something unexpected... Just like my last journal, I used plastic toys to build my mixed media piece. I found the plastic pegasus pony at my local King Dollar Store. I love her hot pink color but she's not the prettiest looking pony... but upon further inspection, her wings are absolutely GORGEOUS!! So much detail and texture just in her wings... I just had to take her home and sacrifice her for a greater cause.

Yes, I killed a pony. I'm not a bad person (I promise) but I have to say... I most definitely would and WILL do it again. Sorry kids... Just look away!!

I yanked out her wings... which surprisingly were easy to dismember from her body. Then trimmed off the stumpy plugs off the ends.

WOOT WOOT!! A huge pair of pretty WINGS for a little over $1!! WIN!!

Then, I used mixed media glue to attach the wings to the center of my frame.

And glued a metal heart bezel over top using more mixed media glue. There was quite a bit of a gap so I used some craft foam to fill that uneven space under the bezel.

I used more foam under the tin metal heart and glued it onto the top of the bezel.

While the glue was setting I placed an ink pad between my cover flaps to keep it level so the embellishments don't slide before they set.

Then I added these clear art pebbles for added interest.

Once the glue set, I painted the entire cover and embellishments with black chalkboard paint.

I dry brushed on emerald green and opal magic blue pink acrylic paint over the wings, burlap, pebbles, and bezel.

I ended up repainting the center of the heart and the frame black. I didn't like the grout of my brick green and I wanted the gilding wax to stand out. It really stands out and does best over black.

Then I applied gilding wax over all the metal embellishments and random raised areas along the cover. Rubbers lightly over the grooves in the corrugate, mesh, and burlap... and also tips of the wings and over the brick of the frame.

 I brushed on black chalkboard paint over my Tim Holtz Word Band then rubbed off the excess. I just wanted the paint in the recessed areas in the words. then attached it to the front cover under the frame.

 Then I painted over the back flap and insides with more chalkboard paint and set it aside to dry.

After my journal was dried, I threaded elastic strands through the pre-cut holes and tied the ends into a knot. Then inserted black page inserts I had made earlier... to see how I made my journal inserts, please visit my previous journal making post.

I personally think plain white pages in dark journals look awkward but black pages look amazing!! 

But you can use whatever inserts you like.
