Eileen Hull Christmas Mash-up

Hey, Crafty Friends!! 

Can you believe it is December already? This holiday season is flying by so fast and Christmas will be here in just 3 weeks!! And it's time to kick the Christmas gift making into gear!! I'm here with Team Eileen Hull with a Holiday Mash-up of some of my favorite EH Christmas projects...

I made these four projects with several Classic Eileen Hull dies.

I've included the names of these Classics, along with links to their tutorials. Please note that these dies are retired and although they may be discontinued, you may still be able to find them online with certain retailers or selling sites. These are highly sought after and make an excellent addition to any die-cutting collection.

DIY Christmas Canvas Art

Hey, Crafty Friends!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas at my house. I'll be honest... I'm a bit slow at getting my Halloween stuff down and put away. In fact, there may or may not be grapevine pumpkins still sitting on my front porch. But I did manage to clear all the skulls and tombstones off my fireplace mantle and drape garland and put up and decorate the tree. So, that has to count for something right?!

I'm not the type to scale my house and hang lights and neither is my husband. So I think I'll stick to simply decorating indoors. Sometimes finding decor to fit you can be hard to do. I wanted something that was festive yet motivational... aaaand... I LOVE PUNS!!! And I knew I wanted to use Santa's SLEIGH in place of the word SLAY... as is KILLIN' IT, OWN IT, SEIZE THE DAY... SHOW THEM WHO'S BOSS!! So I created this totally "punny" Christmas canvas using some Derwent art supplies and my Xyron Creative StationLite.

I knew I wanted to paint my canvas and not just glue paper to it. But if you don't have an artistic bone in your body, fret not. You can still use your die cuts without adding bulk. You can use them for stencils and masks. Let me show you how...

For my masks and stencils, I like to use thin sheets of acetate (the same stuff you use to make shaker card windows from). They are nice and thin and easy to die cut. I cut my sheets in half ( I kept the protective tissue paper on the back so you could see the sheet. Otherwise, it's very difficult to see by itself).

 I like running my sheets through my Xyron Creative Station or Creative Station Lite using a REPOSITIONABLE refill cartridge before die-cutting. That way the masks are good to go once the shapes are cut out and by using the repositionable adhesive you can use it over and over. Just save the backer once you're done and store it for future use.

 I love this sleigh die I have by Brenda Walton. It's actually part of a 3D box die but the side panels are also gorgeous on its own. And it was my inspiration for my canvas. I die cut it glossy/ shiny acrylic side down.

Before applying it to my canvas, I taped off a border using blue painter's tape. Then used a t-ruler to help with placement so my sleigh laid straight and not crooked like it was either gonna take off into the sky or descend for a landing. 

Then I removed the film backer and added the sleigh to my canvas.

I also die cut alphabets using Tim Holts' Letterboard die to spell the word EVERYDAY. Again I used the t-ruler (it was such a lifesaver) and made letter placement so much easier. 

 Then, I squeezed globs of Scarlet and Crimson Red onto my paint palette. starting with the lighter of the two reds, I painted over my masks. Then added the darker red to the outer edges and blended inward.

You'll notice a white gap where I didn't paint. that was my masked area so it wasn't going to be painted so I didn't need to cover the center completely. I did, however, go back and add more Scarlet red to blend out the harsh dark border. 

Once, I was satisfied I began to remove the masks (while the paint was still wet). I used my piercing tool to help get the pieces off easier.

Next, I removed the painter's tape. Then sped up the drying time of the paint with my heat gun.

 I decided I wanted a border of gold around the red center but didn't trust myself to make an evenly thick line and straight border. So I taped off one with more painters tape. First I edge up the red center, then I eyeballed it and gave about a 1/4" gap. I pressed the tape down firmly then colored in the gap with a gold metallic paint marker.

 After removing the tape, I outlined my masked areas with a black permanent ink pen. Then I filled in the word "EVERYDAY" with black acrylic paint. It definitely made a hige impact!

 Then, I added a black feather boa all along the sides of the canvas using a clear liquid glue. I love all the frou-frou!

And finally, I a satin polka dot ribbon to coordinate. 

I love the thin golden border. It gives definition and makes it oh so fancy!

This really looks like something you buy in a boutique... LOVE it!!

This piece would look great on a wall, on a mantle, or even in a tree like shown here...

Winter Cottage Christmas Ornament

Hello Crafty Friends!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!! And I'm back again with Team Xyron to bring everyone a little bit of holiday cheer with today's project!

Today I will show you how I made this adorable Winter Cottage Christmas Ornament.

I started by cutting a 12"x12" woodgrain patterned paper ,from the Happy Day Stack, in half to measure 6"x 12". Then, I cut my chipboard down to the same measurements.

Using the Tim Holtz Village Dwelling Die, I layered the patterned paper (face down) and the chipboard onto the die. I sandwiched them between two clear cutting plates and used ran my it through my Big Shot machine.

I folded the creases on just the Chipboard pieces. I bent the walls into place and used clear adhesive on the small flaps to connect the pieces together to form a house's walls. 

Next, I trimmed off the flaps/ tabs of the patterned pieces and cut along the crease lines to separate the segmented pieces.

I used a sweeper tool and Tim Holtz' Vintage Photo Distress ink to shade the edges.

Once ink was dry, I ran the pieces through my 3" XYron Sticker Maker. Then peeled and applied to the chipboard house.

I also Die cut the roof and porch pieces out of chipboard but opted to use this gorgeous green plaid from the Christmas Plaid stack for the rooftop and door. I die-cut the windows from just plain white cardstock.

Using the Tim Holtz Village Winter die I die-cut all the snow and ice  from white felt. Then ran those through my Xyron Sticker Maker as well.

Helpful tip: Before peeling the protective film off the felt... give it a heavy handed press/ rubdown.

Then, I attached the snow onto the rooftop.

Before attaching the roof top to the cottage, I used my piercing tool to create a small hole atop the roofline. Then, I threaded some brown and white Paper String through the hole and double knotted it. 

Then with more clear liquid adhesive, I attached the roof as well as the porch.

I added a few green velvet holly leaves and a button topped bow and glued them to the top of my cottage.

I diecut the windows and and porch pillars from white cardstock then used more clear liquid adhesive to attach them to little dwelling.

And, here is my finished ornament...

This is just too adorable!!

These are not overly big and not teeny tiny either. But because we used light weighted materials it is quite a substantial ornament.

This turned out so CUUUUTTEE!! I LOVE IT!!

No-Sew Sock Penguin Christmas Ornaments

Hello, Crafty Friends and DIYers!! I will be hosting day #11 of the 31 Days of Handmade Christmas Ornaments!!

And today, I will be doing a remake of a popular holiday favorite... but with a twist. Today, I will be showing you how to make No-Sew Sock Penguins. It is a remake and miniature version of the popular No-Sew Sock Snowmen! You can revisit my original tutorial post here.

Supplies Used

Low Cut Socks 

Super Soft/ Fuzzy Toe Socks

Hot Glue gun & Sticks

Roll of Tulle

White Felt

Rice

Polyester Fiberfill

Decorative Cord

Flat back Pearls

I started by cutting a the heel and ankle off of each sock. making sure to cut across evenly. These will be the penguin bodies.

For the inside stuffing I cut tulle into 4" squares. I added about 2 Tbls of rice to the center and tied it closed with twine creating a sachet. 

Using a plastic cup to hold my sock up right, I inserted my sachet. I filled the remainder of the sock with about a handful and a half of polyester fiberfill.  Then used more twine to tie close and snipped the excess twine off.

For the simple beanie hat I love to use "toe socks"! I cut the sock in half (4" from the toes seems to be the midway point). 

I gather all the "toes" and tie them together in a bunch... yes, with (you guessed it) more twine and trim the ends. This part will be out hat. 

Cut a 2" strip from the remain sock piece. Snip one end to create a strip. This will be the scarf.

I cut a 1" heart and a 2" oval for the head and belly. Then adhered the pieces onto the body with hot glue.

I used my glue gun again, this time attaching the hat onto the top of the head. Then, I used decorative cord to tie a knot and make a loop. I hot glued the loop to the top of the hat.

For eyes, I used flat back pearls and colored them with a black Sharpie. Then glued them onto the felt heart to make the beginnings of the penguin's face. 

For his little beak, I simply drew a triangle use orange 

I didn't have green leaves so I just shaded some brown I had. then hot glued the leaves along with a bell onto the the beanies.

And here are my adorable sock penguins!!!

These little cuties were made with regular (no separated toe) socks,

Can't find black socks... well, nix the heart faces and oval bellies and opt for white socks instead! Then you have SNOWMEN! And these cuties have button instead of flat-back pearls for eyes!

Altered Christmas Frame

Hey, Crafty Friends!! The most wondeful time the year is fast approaching! That means  it's tie to swith our crafting into over drive so we can make all those holiday crafts before the actual holiday get's here!! And today I have a altered picture frame to share with you all today.

I started off with an inexpensive picture frame I picked up at my local dollar store. It was just a little too blah for me but i knew I ccould dress it up.

I took the mat out of my frame and measured my sides. My mat mesure at 8'x 10" and is 1-1/2" thixk on all sides.

I cut  (2) 10"x1-1/2" peices and  (2) 8"x 1-1/2" pieces out of my patterned paper... which in this case had this pretty cool crackle looking finish to it. 

I cut the end of my strips at a 45 degree angle using my frame and rule as a guide and drawing a line from corner to corner and then I repeated it for all four sides

Then I ebrushed my edges to give it an even more distressed look.

Once that was done, I ran all my trips through my Xyron Creative Station.

Then attached it to my photo mat.

Now it looks like aged painted wood... pretty good for being all paper, huh??!!

Using the insert that comes with the frame... you know which one I'm talking about... the picture of thhe family that isn't yours... yeah, thaat one... I used it as aguid to where to center my picture. It's pre-cut to fit the frame and the pic is already centered to fit exactly into the mat. Takes all the guess work out so I don't have to measure a thing. Then I simply used my Xyron Mega Runner and aadhered my photo. And presto, PERFECT FIT!!

I like the new crackled paint over wood effect that my frame was now sporting but I wanted to kick it up a notch. So, I used my cut embooss machine and cut out some trees using Teresa Collins dies out of craft cardstock.

Then embossed it.

Then I used my ebrush to color over the embossing and sanded it with a saanding block. This exposed the craft paper underneath the raised areas. Then I trimmed then sides of my Christmas trees to fit onto theside f my frame.

Here are more Teresa Collins die cut pieces I made using gold foil cardstock and more craft stock. I ebrushed all the crasft cardstock and left the gold foil pieces alone.

When I first put together my frame, I had only planned to have only the twine bow at top. But it seemed kind off and the yellow tones were making my girls look like theey visited the taanning salon one too many times... their skin appeared orange when it took photos of my frame...

I know I didn't birth oompa loompas so I needed a solution to their orange skin problem

Well, problem solved...

And even though they're the exact same color in both the above and below pics... the Green sprigs balances out and tones down the orang looking skin. My children are naturally tanned but they're not "THAT" tanned!! LOL
